TD-SCDMA Update

- Freescale recently inaugurated its new R&D center in Chengdu, China, which is expected to focus on the development of Chinese homegrown TD-SCDMA technology, Beijing-Business Wire reported. Also, the new facility is projected to focus on the development of other state-of-art technologies, including RF (Radio Frequency), DSP (Digital Signal Processing), and communication processing. By year-end 2009, this facility is expected to employ approximately 100 engineers.

- LG recently unveiled its first TD-SCDMA-compliant mobile phone, codenamed KD876. The KD876 supports automatic switching between TD-SCDMA and GPRS standards and is equipped with a built-in 3MP camera, according to Chinese-language Sina News. Further details as to the rollout schedule and price tag of this new phone were not yet disclosed, though.

- As a follow-up to an Asia Express dated November 2, 2007, in which ZTE was reported to have launched a series of TD-SCDMA-compliant products, ZTE recently announced that the company will start commercializing its TD-SCDMA phones in the first quarter of 2008, the Chinese-language Nanfang Daily reported. To date, the company has rolled out 15 TD-SCDMA mobile phones - predominantly high-end models - which can run on both Windows and Linux OS, according to the same report.
